Location

The Philippines belongs to Southeast Asia located in the western North of the Pacific Ocean along the Pacific Ring of Fire and just above the equator. This country is an archipelago with a total of 7,641 Islands. It has a total area of 300,000 square kilometers with a land area of 298,170 square kilometers and 1,830 square kilometers for its water area. It comprises three major groups of islands, namely, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Luzon is the largest of them all, with an area of 104,688 square kilometers. It is the most populous island of the Philippines and it is also where the Capital City is located. The Philippines is also organized into 17 regions. Each of which has its own capital city.

Political System

The Philippines is a Democratic and Republican country. Every six years, a presidential election will happen.

History

The Philippines is rich in history, knowing it has been colonized by the Spaniards for 333 years. It started when Spain discovered the Philippines led by the Spanish Explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It was also colonized by the Americans and Japanese for a number of years. The country gained its full independence on July 4, 1946. In fact, there are about 120 to 175 languages in the Philippines with 8 major languages but their official language is Tagalog or Filipino. However, a lot of Filipinos know how to speak English. Since this language is also taught in their schools and is known to be one of their official languages.

Capital City

Luzon is where Metro Manila -the National Capital Region of the Philippines- is located. Metro Manila comprises four cities which are: Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, and Pasay, along with 13 municipalities within the area. Manila is the Capital City of the Philippines. Most of the Highest Government Institutions are located in Metro Manila.

Culture

Philippine’s culture has been influenced by the previous colonization. Its culture is a mixture of the east and the west. Filipinos are known to be religious and most of them are Christians. This religion was brought into the country by the Spaniards years ago. Since most of the Filipinos are Christians, Christmas and New Year’s are big events in the Country. Also, Filipinos are into fiesta celebrations, in honor of their patron saints. Like for example, in Cebu, they celebrate Sinulog in honor of their patron saint Sto. Nino. During fiestas, expect that there will be a Lechon (a roasted pig with crispy skin). Filipinos will always include rice in their meals. There’s never a day that they won’t eat rice. They are also into eating snacks a few hours after each meal.
